Mitsubishi 4G63T Engine 2.0L Turbo

The Mitsubishi 4G63T is a 2.0-liter, turbocharged inline-4 engine widely regarded as one of the most durable and tunable 4-cylinder engines ever produced. Produced from 1987 to 2007, the 4G63T powered the legendary Lancer Evolution I through IX, Eclipse GSX, and Galant VR-4. Featuring a cast iron closed-deck block, factory forged connecting rods (Evolution models), and an almost indestructible bottom end, the 4G63T is capable of reliably supporting 400-600+ horsepower on stock internals and over 1,000 horsepower with proper modifications.

Early 4G63T, 6-bolt block

  • Closed-Deck Cast Iron Block: Solid cast iron construction with no open water jacket gaps around cylinders. Provides extreme cylinder support and eliminates bore flex under high boost (1,000+ HP capable).

  • Factory Forged Connecting Rods (Evolution models only): High-strength forged steel rods shot-peened from the factory. Capable of 500-600+ whp on stock rods.

  • Factory Forged Crankshaft: Nodular cast iron or forged steel crankshaft (depending on variant) with 8 counterweights for high-RPM stability.

  • MIVEC (Evo IX only): Mitsubishi's variable valve timing system on the intake cam improves low-end torque, throttle response, and fuel efficiency.

  • 6-Bolt vs 7-Bolt Crankcase: Early 4G63T engines (pre-1992) feature 6-bolt flywheel/flexplate mounting and are known for superior crankwalk resistance. 7-bolt (1992+) is lighter but has higher crankwalk risk.

  • Piston Oil Squirters: Factory oil jets cool pistons and improve detonation resistance under high boost.

  • Squirters (Oil Jets): Directed at the bottom of each piston for enhanced cooling.

  • DOHC 16-Valve Cylinder Head: High-flow cross-flow design with mechanical lifters (early) or hydraulic lifters (later).

  • Cast Aluminum Oil Pan: Baffled design for high-G cornering.

  • Timing Belt (Interference Engine): Requires regular maintenance (60k mile intervals) to prevent catastrophic valve-piston contact.
